DEVELOPMENT: AN OVERVIEW (NIGERIA)

Development is all we want, it is what we have been clamouring for in the face of autocracy. People have been working real hard to ensure sustainable development in their areas of endeavour. Teachers, doctors, lawyers to mention but few, have often been zealous in the discharge of their duties towards national objectives, the ideologies and realization, upholding the principles of development.

A look at the documentation, national policy on education, one will see a flawless, victorious channel to national development as it reflected all that is worth inculcating from childhood to adulthood, all that equips an individual physically, vocationally, socially and otherwise. The government’s plans towards achieving these objectives too are perfect… in theory.

But in reality, there are conflicts over conflicts even before this century. On the news, we hear either non-payment of salaries or fuel price hike which automatically raises the prices of other commodities. Then there is a strike, parents come home fierce with barren pockets, schools close down, workers down tools in protest and the whole economy is crippled. Worker are called back and all pretend that all is well and the cycle begins, on and on it goes. In situation like this, how does one achieve sustainable development?

The process of development is relatively long term, so is poverty alleviation and so is the developmental process of achieving a nation’s objective through education. Let us begin to look inwards to the young generation, knowing that our dreams can be real through them. We feel the national policy on Education needs no review but strict adherence. By subsidizing education ( or making it free) and accessible to children of school-going ages, the nation will take a new turn.
